NOTE

INTRODUCTION TO THE WORLDWIDE WEB(www)

The full meaning of WWW is World Wide Web.

It is a series of servers that have been interconnected through hypertext.

Hypertext is one method of presenting information in which certain items are highlighted. By selecting one such highlighted text, you can obtain more information on the same topic.

The “Web” offers another service called uniform resource locator which allows you to locate data resident anywhere on the web.

BRIEF HISTORY OF WWW

The World Wide Web was developed by British physicist and computer scientist, Timothy Berners-Lee as a project within the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland.

Berners-Lee combined several existing ideas into a single system to make it easier for physicist to use data on the internet. Most important he added multimedia – the ability to include graphics to the hyperlink concept found in a precious internet service known as gopher.

Berners-Lee had begun working with hypertext in the early 1980s. As early prototype implementation of the Web became operational at CERN in 1989, and the idea quickly spread to universities and the rest of the world.

BASIC TERMINOLOGIES

  1. Webserver

This is a program that responds to requests from web browsers to retrieve resources. It is used to refer to the computer that runs the server program.

This is the first document displayed when you open a website. It contains links to other pages or other sites.

  1. HTML  (Hypertext Markup Language)

It is used to format a web document

They use graphical user interface (GUI) for searching, finding, viewing and managing information, browser unveils the content of WWW.

  1. Webpage

A document designed for viewing in a web browser. It is often written in HTML (Hypertext Markup Language).

  1. Protocols

Protocols are set of rules and regulations that determines how data is transmitted in telecommunication and computer network. It is the language for networked computers.

LIST OF www PROTOCOLS

  1. HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol)is the set of rules for transferring files ( text, graphic images sound, video and other multimedia files) on the world wide web.
  2. HTML (Hypertext Markup Language)is a computer language used to build web pages.

Other protocols Include:

  1. TCP: Transmission Control Protocol
  2. UDP: User Data-gram Protocol
  3. SMTP: Simple Mail Transfer Protocol
  4. FTP: File Transfer Protocol
  5. POP: Post Office Protocol
  6. ICMP: Internet Control Protocol

EVALUATION:    1. Describe worldwide web and state its meaning
