DEVELOPMENT OF POLITICAL PARTIES IN NIGERIA(GNPP and PRP)

GREAT NIGERIAN PEOPLE'S PARTY (GNPP):

It was formed by Alhaji Ibrahim Waziri. He left NPP to form GNPP because of quarrels over the presidential and chairmanship position. He was both the leader and presidential candidate.

GNPP was a minor party and succeeded in winning gubernatorial election in only two states (Borno and Gongola).

 

AIMS/OBJECTIVES OF GNPP

  1. To foster a dynamic and vibrant economy.
  2. To provide an equitable distribution of national wealth for the development of all parts of the country.

 

ACHIEVEMENTS OF GNPP

  1. The party won governorship seat of two states — Borno and Gongola.
  2. It also secured control of the House of Assembly in Gongola and Borno State respectively.

PEOPLE'S REDEMPTION PARTY (PRP)

This party was formed by Mallam Aminu Kano, who pulled out of the NPN. He was both the party's National Chairman and their presidential candidate. Alhaji Amunu Kano was the leader of the Northern Elements Progressive Union (NEPU). Like NEPU, the PRP agitated for the emancipation of the poor masses of Northern Nigeria in particular and Nigeria in general.

PRP was a minor party and succeeded in winning governorship election in only two states (Kano and Kaduna) in 1979.

 

AIMS/OBJECTIVES OF PRP

  1. Education for all, i.e. mass literacy.
  2. To promote the interest of the peasant masses of Nigeria (Agriculture).

 

ACHIEVEMENTS OF PRP

  1. It Won governorship seats in Kano and Kaduna.
  2. Land was made available to the peasant farmers in the two states it controlled.
