Title: Farm Animal Disease Practical Session

Objective:

To familiarize students with common diseases in poultry and their symptoms, while also learning about control measures for farm animal parasites.

  4. Gloves and hand sanitizer for hygiene during practical activities

Session Plan:

  1. Introduction (15 minutes):

- Provide an overview of common diseases affecting poultry and the importance of disease prevention and control in farm animal management.

- Explain the objectives and activities planned for the session.

  1. Visit to Established Poultry Farm (1 hour):

       i. Observation of poultry farm operations:

- Visit an established poultry farm to observe the management practices and biosecurity measures in place.

- Learn about the housing system, feeding regimen, vaccination schedule, and biosecurity protocols implemented to prevent disease outbreaks.

- Observe the flock of poultry birds and identify healthy birds versus those showing symptoms of disease.

  1. Observation and Reporting (45 minutes):

       ii. Observation of school poultry birds:

- Return to the school poultry facility or designated area with poultry birds.

- Students observe the school poultry birds closely for symptoms of disease, such as respiratory distress, diarrhea, decreased activity, abnormal posture, or unusual vocalizations.

- Each student notes down their observations in a report format, including the number of birds affected, specific symptoms observed, and any other relevant details.

- Encourage students to take photos or videos (if permitted) to document their observations.

  1. Demonstration of Control Measures (45 minutes):

       iii. Teacher-led demonstration of parasite control measures:

- The teacher demonstrates various control measures for farm animal parasites, focusing on poultry-specific parasites such as worms, mites, lice, and flies.

- Discuss different methods of parasite control, including environmental management, biosecurity practices, and the use of veterinary products such as dewormers and insecticides.

- Demonstrate proper application techniques for administering dewormers or insecticides to poultry birds.

- Emphasize the importance of regular monitoring and integrated pest management strategies for effective parasite control on poultry farms.

  1. Discussion and Conclusion (15 minutes):

- Gather students to discuss their observations and findings from the practical session.
