NOTE

DEVELOPMENT OF POLITICAL PARTIES IN NIGERIA(NRC and SDP)

SOCIAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY AND NATIONAL REPUBLICAN PARTY.

SDP:

SDP was registered and approved by the Armed Forces Ruling Council(AFRC).

Chief Tony Anenih was SDP’s national chairman. SDP had its registered offices in the FCT, Abuja, all state capitals, Local Government, Headquarters (secretariat) and every ward in the federation.

 

NRC.

NRC’s national chairman was Chief Tom Ikimi.

It was also registered by the ARFC in 1992.

It also had its registered offices in the FCT, Abuja, all state capitals, Local Government, Headquarters (secretariat) and every ward in the federation.

SDP and NRC were formed and registered in accordance with the 1989 Nigerian constitution (electoral rules/laws).

The party’s objectives, policies and programs were set up by the military government (General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida) which made the party’s structure and objectives similar.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF NRC AND SDP.

  1. To promote participation in democracy at all levels.
  2. To obtain political powers in democratic and constitutional means.
  3. Aimed at pursuing political, economic and social objectives of the country
  1. Sponsor candidates for elections into elected offices from local government to the highest office (presidency).
  2. Sponsored candidates for the 1991-1993 elections.
  3. The party was able to get members across the country.
  4. The party won states and many local government elections, won 16 states(governorship) out of 30 states.

 

ACHIEVEMENTS OF SDP.

  1. Won majority of seats in both houses.
  2. Won 14 states out of the then existing 30 states.
  3. Was believed to have won the presidential elections.

 

SOURCES OF FINANCE FOR NRC AND SDP.

  1. The government was the major financier.
  2. Party members pay membership fees as may be levied by the party.
  3. The decree that set up the parties made provisions for contributions by party sympathizers.
  4. Forms purchased by the candidates and even to be a party member or members
