SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, Learners should be able to;
a. Understand the structure of an expository composition
b. Discuss current issues and how to present them logically
c. Develop an expository essay based on topics discussed in class
INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES: Discussion, group activities, individual writing
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS: Whiteboard, markers, handouts on expository essay structure
INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES:
PERIOD 1:

  • Introduction: Teacher introduces the topic by discussing the concept of expository essays, focusing on writing to inform, explain, or describe.
  • Content Delivery: Teacher discusses current issues, such as climate change, education, or unemployment, and how to structure an essay on these issues.
  • Class Activity: Students brainstorm in groups about various current issues.
  • Examples: Teacher presents a few expository essay openings related to current issues, such as: "The rising unemployment rate in many countries is a major issue that affects the economy and the well-being of citizens."
  • Conclusion: Students are asked to write a short expository introduction on a chosen current issue.

 

PERIOD 2:

  • Writing Practice: Students develop their expository essays on one of the current issues discussed, ensuring they follow the correct structure (introduction, body, conclusion).
  • Teacher Support: Teacher moves around the classroom, offering guidance and feedback.
  • Conclusion: Collect essays for marking.
