NOTE

CARE OF CLOTHING: REPAIR PATCHING

Repair patching is a technique used to mend damaged areas of fabric by applying a patch over the affected area. It involves attaching a piece of fabric to the garment using sewing techniques to reinforce and cover holes, tears, or worn-out areas.

Some examples of repair patching are:

  1. Patching a Hole in Jeans
  2. Mending a Tear in a T-shirt
  3. Fixing a Rip in a Jacket
  4. Repairing a Tear in Upholstery

Process of repair patching

The process of repair patching typically involves the following steps:

  1. Prepare the Patch: Cut a piece of fabric slightly larger than the damaged area to be patched. The patch fabric should ideally match the color, texture, and weight of the garment fabric for a seamless repair.
  2. Position the Patch: Place the patch over the damaged area on the inside or outside of the garment, depending on the desired aesthetic and visibility of the repair.
  3. Secure the Patch: Pin or baste the patch in place to hold it securely against the garment fabric. Make sure the patch lies flat and covers the entire damaged area.
  4. Sew the Patch: Use a sewing machine or hand stitching to attach the patch to the garment fabric. Sew around the edges of the patch, stitching through both the patch and the garment fabric to create a strong and secure bond.
  5. Finish the Edges: Trim any excess fabric from the edges of the patch and garment to create a neat and tidy finish. Optionally, you can finish the edges with a zigzag stitch or overlock stitch to prevent fraying.
  6. Press the Patch: Press the patched area with an iron to flatten and smooth out any wrinkles or creases, ensuring a polished appearance.
