NOTE

FAMILY PLANNING AND SAFE MOTHERHOOD

Family planning refers to the practice of controlling the number and timing of children a couple has, often through the use of contraceptive methods. It encompasses a range of services and educational efforts aimed at helping individuals and couples achieve their desired family size and avoid unintended pregnancies.

Objectives of family planning

  1. Use of methods such as birth control pills, condoms, intrauterine devices (IUDs), sterilization, and natural family planning methods.
  2. Providing information about reproductive health, contraception options, and family planning strategies.
  3. Access to health care services that support safe pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care.
  4. Addressing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and ensuring safe sexual practices.

Safe motherhood

Safe motherhood refers to ensuring that women have access to the necessary healthcare, services, and support before, during, and after childbirth to ensure a safe and healthy pregnancy and delivery. This includes prenatal care, skilled attendance during childbirth, postnatal care, access to emergency obstetric care if needed, and education on maternal and newborn health.

Objectives of safe motherhood

The objectives of safe motherhood initiatives generally aim to:

  1. Reduce Maternal Mortality: By ensuring access to quality prenatal, childbirth, and postnatal care, the goal is to decrease the number of maternal deaths during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period.
  2. Enhance the overall health and well-being of women during pregnancy and childbirth by providing comprehensive healthcare services, including prenatal screenings, nutritional support, and management of complications.
  3. Ensure that newborns receive the necessary care and support immediately after birth, including essential newborn care practices, immunizations, and treatment for any complications.
  4. Increase access to family planning services, including contraceptives and education, to enable women to make informed choices about their reproductive health and spacing of pregnancies.
  5. Empower women and communities with knowledge about maternal and newborn health, promote gender equality, and address social and cultural factors that impact maternal and child health outcomes

Pillars of safe motherhood.
