TEACHER’S ACTIVITY

LEARNERS ACTIVITY

1

INTRODUCTION

The teacher revises the previous lesson on adjectival clauses and introduces adverbial clauses. She explains that adverbial clauses modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs and are introduced by subordinating conjunctions like because, when, if, although, etc.

Learners listen and ask questions.

2

EXPLICIT INSTRUCTION / TEACHER MODELLING

The teacher explains and models different types of adverbial clauses:

  • Time clauses: when, before, after
  • Cause/reason clauses: because, since
  • Condition clauses: if, unless
  • Concession clauses: although, even though

The teacher gives examples: I will stay at home if it rains. Although she was tired, she went to work.

Learners observe, ask questions, and take notes

3

EVALUATION

The teacher asks learners to identify the type and function of the adverbial clause in the sentence:

I stayed at home because it was raining

Learners identify the type (cause/reason) and explain its function.

4

CLASS-WORK

The teacher gives learners the following sentences and asks them to underline the adverbial clauses and identify their types:

1.   He went to the park after school.

2.   I didn’t go to the party because I was sick.

3.   If you study hard, you will pass the exam.

4.   Although it was raining, we played football.

Learners underline the adverbial clauses and identify their types and functions.

5

  • She stayed up late because she had to finish her assignment.
  • When the bell rings, we will leave the class.
