NOTE
BASKETBALL
Basketball is a team sport in which two teams of five players each compete to score points by shooting a ball through the opposing team's hoop, a circular basket mounted 10 feet high to a backboard at each end of the court. The game is played on a rectangular court and involves elements of dribbling, passing, shooting, rebounding, and defending.
Basic Skills for Basketball
- Dribbling: The ability to bounce the ball continuously while moving, allowing players to navigate the court.
- Passing: The skill of accurately throwing the ball to teammates, essential for maintaining possession and setting up scoring opportunities.
- Shooting: The act of throwing the ball into the hoop to score points, including techniques like lay-ups, jump shots, and three-pointers.
- Rebounding: The ability to retrieve the ball after a missed shot, crucial for gaining possession and creating second-chance scoring opportunities.
- Defense: Skills involved in preventing the opposing team from scoring, including guarding opponents, blocking shots, and stealing the ball.
- Footwork: Proper movement techniques that help in both offensive and defensive plays, including pivoting, sprinting, and maintaining balance.
Rules and Regulations
- Game Duration: A standard basketball game is played in four quarters, each lasting 12 minutes in the NBA, with variations in other leagues and levels of play.
- Scoring: Points are scored by making field goals (2 points) or three-point shots (3 points from beyond the three-point line) and free throws (1 point each).
- Shot Clock: Teams have a limited amount of time (24 seconds in the NBA) to attempt a shot, promoting continuous play.
- Dribbling Violations: Players must dribble the ball while moving. Violations include traveling (taking steps without dribbling) and double dribbling (stopping dribbling and then starting again).
- Fouls: Physical contact that impedes an opponent's play can result in personal fouls. Accumulation of fouls can lead to free throws for the opposing team or disqualification of a player.
- Out of Bounds: The ball is considered out of bounds when it touches the boundary lines or any area outside the court. Possession is awarded to the opposing team.
- Backcourt Violation: Once the ball crosses into the offensive half of the court, it cannot be returned to the defensive half by the same team.
- Substitutions: Teams can substitute players during stoppages in play, allowing fresh players to enter the game.
- Timeouts: Coaches can call timeouts to discuss strategy, rest players, or stop the game’s momentum. Each team has a limited number of timeouts.
EVALUATION: 1. What is basketball?

- Mention 5 rules and regulations of basketball
