Practical Session: Exploration of Rangelands and Collection of Pasture Plants
Objective:
The objective of this practical session is to provide students with hands-on experience in exploring rangelands, identifying common pasture grasses and legumes, and collecting plant samples for further study.
Materials Needed:
Procedure:
- Provide an overview of the objectives and safety guidelines for the field trip.
- Distribute field guides or identification keys to students and review key characteristics of common pasture grasses and legumes.
- Ensure that students are equipped with appropriate clothing, footwear, and PPE for outdoor exploration.
- Transport students to a nearby rangeland or grassland area with diverse vegetation.
- Lead students on a guided tour of the rangeland, pointing out different plant communities, soil types, and landscape features.
- Encourage students to observe and ask questions about the vegetation, wildlife, and ecological processes occurring in the rangeland.
- Instruct students to identify and collect samples of common pasture grasses found in the rangeland.
- Demonstrate proper collection techniques, such as using hand clippers or scissors to cut plant samples at the base of the stem.
- Encourage students to collect a variety of grass species, noting their physical characteristics, growth habits, and habitat preferences.
- Guide students in identifying and collecting samples of common pasture legumes present in the rangeland.
- Highlight distinguishing features of legume plants, such as leaf shape, flower color, and seed pods.
- Assist students in selecting representative samples of legume species for further examination and analysis.
- Have students record their observations, including plant species collected, habitat characteristics, and any notable features or adaptations observed.
- Encourage students to take photographs or make sketches of collected plant specimens for documentation purposes.
- Facilitate discussions on the ecological roles and importance of pasture grasses and legumes in rangeland ecosystems.
- Gather students together for a group discussion to share their experiences and insights from the field trip.
- Reflect on the diversity and significance of rangeland vegetation, as well as the ecological services provided by pasture grasses and legumes.
EVALUATION: 1. Teacher evaluates the students based on their performance from the field trip.
