NOTE

NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASES

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are diseases that are not transmitted directly from one person to another. These diseases typically have a long duration and are the result of a combination of genetic, physiological, environmental, and behavioral factors. Examples include cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes. Mental health diseases like trauma and depression are also included under this.

Causes of non-communicable diseases

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) have various causes, including

  1. Lifestyle factors: like unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity, tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption.
  2. Environmental factors such as pollution and exposure to harmful chemicals. Additionally, genetic predispositions and underlying medical conditions can also contribute to NCDs.
  3. Physiological Factors: Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, Blood Glucose, Hyperlipidemia, Overweight or Obesity.

Common non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and their causes

  1. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs): These include heart attacks, strokes, and hypertension. Causes can include unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity, tobacco use, and excessive alcohol consumption.
  2. Cancer: Various types of cancer can develop due to genetic factors, exposure to carcinogens (like tobacco smoke, UV radiation), unhealthy lifestyle choices, and environmental factors.
  3. Chronic respiratory diseases: Conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and occupational lung diseases. Smoking, air pollution, and exposure to indoor pollutants are common causes.
  4. Diabetes: Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes result from genetic and environmental factors, including poor diet, obesity, and lack of physical activity.
  5. Obesity: While not a disease itself, obesity contributes to various NCDs, including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and certain cancers. Causes include unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity, genetic factors, and environmental factors.

EVALUATION: 1. Define non communicable diseases

  1. Identify the causes of non-communicable diseases
  2. Mention 3 non communicable diseases and identify their causes.
