NOTE

IMPORTANCE OF RANGE LAND

The following are the importance of Rangelands

  1. Provides Balanced Feeds: Rangelands offer a diverse array of plant species, providing a balanced diet for grazing animals. This diversity ensures that animals have access to a variety of nutrients necessary for their health and productivity.
  2. Source of Protein Needs: Rangelands often support leguminous plants and grasses that are rich in protein, meeting the protein requirements of grazing animals. This natural protein source contributes to the growth, development, and reproduction of livestock.
  3. Source of Cheap Quality Feeds for Animals: Rangelands provide a cost-effective source of forage for grazing animals, reducing the need for supplemental feeds. This helps farmers save on feeding costs while ensuring that animals receive high-quality nutrition.
  4. Animals Exercise Themselves Maximally: Grazing on rangelands allows animals to engage in natural foraging behaviors, including walking, grazing, and browsing. This promotes physical activity and exercise, contributing to the overall health and well-being of the animals.
  5. Reduces Cost of Feeding: Utilizing rangelands for grazing can significantly reduce the cost of feeding livestock compared to intensive feeding systems. By relying on natural pasture resources, farmers can lower their expenses on purchased feeds and concentrates.
  6. Prevents Soil Erosion: Rangelands play a crucial role in soil conservation by providing vegetative cover that protects the soil from erosion by wind and water. The extensive root systems of grasses and plants help stabilize soil, reducing the risk of erosion and maintaining soil fertility.
  7. Supports Biodiversity: Rangelands support diverse plant and animal communities, contributing to biodiversity conservation. These ecosystems provide habitat for a wide range of wildlife species, including birds, mammals, and insects, promoting ecological balance and resilience.
  8. Sustains Livelihoods: Rangelands support traditional pastoralism and rural livelihoods, providing economic opportunities for livestock producers. Grazing on rangelands is a sustainable livelihood strategy for many communities, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions where alternative agricultural activities may be limited.

EVALUATION: 1. State 5 importance of range land

  1. Discuss briefly the importance of rangeland mentioned in 1 above.
