FUNCTIONS AND PROBLEMS OF FARM MANAGERS

The farm manager is also called the entrepreneur, his duty includes organization, administration, production and marketing of produce from the farm. The reward for management is profit.

FUNCTIONS

ORGANIZATION

  1. He secures suitable land for farming
  2. He determines what to produce
  3. He determines the scale of production
  4. He procures loan or capital for farming
  5. He recruits workers

 

ADMINISTRATION

  1. He supervises the work on the farm
  2. He arranges work roster
  3. He directs workers or staff on day-to-day activities
  4. He arranges for staff welfare
  5. He rewards or discipline staff according to their performance
  6. He organizes the training of man power in the farm
  7. He tries to maintain good labour relations to avoid the disruption of farm activities
  8. He acquaints himself with government policies with respect to opportunities and constrains posed on the farm

 

PRODUCTION

  1. He is responsible for the purchases and use of farm inputs
  2. He ensure that crops/animals are in good health conditions
  3. He arranges for general security of the farm
  4. He ensures adequate supply of feed for animals
  5. He adheres to modern farming techniques
  6. He avoids waste by efficient use and maintenance of farm resources

MARKETING

  4. He monitors marketing trends to help him decide on commodity to produce and make profit
  5. He organizes for storage and warehousing for unsold produce

PROBLEMS OF FARM MANAGER

  1. Inadequate information: He may lack information on where to acquire farm inputs or new innovations in farming
  2. Marketing problem: He may not know where and how to sell his produce, at which time and price to sell to make maximum profit.
  3. Inadequate farm input: farm inputs like seeds, feed, fertilizer and chemicals may be inadequate, scarce and expensive to get
  4. Financial Problem: He may not have enough capital, banks may not provide loan and produce may not sell at the right price to make more profit as to reinvest in the business.
  5. Inadequate personnel: He may not get the right management team to work on the farm and they may be too expensive to employ for the farm.
  6. Transport Problem: He may not have a vehicle to run around for the farm and sell farm produce.
  7. Administrative Problem: He may lack the technical knowledge, good human relationship with staff and his health condition may affect the performance of his duty.
  8. Government Policy: Government Policies like importation of food produced by the farm manger may lead to losses, discouragement and may lead to folding up of the business
