CARE OF CLOTHES: RENOVATION PROCESS III

Renovating household article and old garments

To maintain the good appearance and obtain the most wear out of a garment, it is essential to take good care of the garment and repair when necessary.

Repairing simple tear when you first notice it can prevent more lenthy repairs or the actual replacement of the article. It is therefore important that you learn how to carry out simple repairs on garment. Other simple household repairs include:

  1. Sewing Buttons: Replace missing buttons or reinforce loose ones.
  2. Fixing Hems: Sew up loose hems on pants, skirts, or dresses to prevent them from unraveling further.
  3. Mending Rips and Tears: Use a needle and thread to stitch up small holes or tears in fabric.
  4. Patchwork: Cover larger holes or stains with patches of fabric, either on the inside or outside of the garment, depending on the look you're going for.
  5. Replacing Zippers: If a zipper is broken, you can replace it with a new one using a sewing kit or take it to a tailor for repair.
  6. Adjusting Fit: Take in or let out seams to adjust the fit of a garment if it's too tight or loose.

Guidelines for using a zipper

  1. Be gentle when pulling the zipper up or down to avoid damaging the teeth or slider.
  2. Ensure that both sides of the zipper teeth are aligned properly before zipping up. Misalignment can cause the zipper to get stuck.
  3. When zipping up, start at the bottom of the zipper and move the slider upwards smoothly. This helps prevent the zipper from getting caught on fabric or other obstacles.
  4. Hold the fabric on both sides of the zipper taut while zipping up or down to prevent puckering or bunching.
  5. Avoid overloading the zipper with too much fabric or items, as this can put strain on the zipper and cause it to break or get stuck.
  6. Regularly clean the zipper and its surrounding fabric to remove dirt, dust, and debris that can cause it to malfunction.
