NOTE

RANGE LAND

Rangeland refers to extensive land areas primarily used for grazing livestock, often characterized by native vegetation such as grasses, shrubs, and herbs. These lands may also support wildlife and provide other ecosystem services. Rangelands are typically found in arid, semi-arid, or sub-humid regions where agriculture is limited due to low precipitation or soil fertility.

Characteristics of Rangeland:

  1. Rangelands exhibit a diverse range of plant species adapted to the local climate and soil conditions, including grasses, forbs, shrubs, and sometimes trees.
  2. Rangelands have the capacity to support livestock grazing, with vegetation that regenerates after grazing pressure and maintains ecological balance.
  3. Rangelands experience variable climate conditions, including seasonal fluctuations in temperature, precipitation, and humidity, which influence vegetation growth and animal productivity.
  4. Rangeland soils vary in texture, fertility, and moisture-holding capacity, influencing plant growth and nutrient availability.
  5. Wildlife Habitat: Rangelands provide habitat for a diverse range of wildlife species, including mammals, birds, reptiles, and insects, contributing to biodiversity conservation.
  6. Rangelands provide essential ecosystem services, including soil stabilization, water filtration, carbon sequestration, and recreational opportunities.
  7. Rangelands may be managed through practices such as rotational grazing, rest-rotation grazing, and prescribed burning to maintain vegetation health and productivity while conserving soil and water resources.
  8. Rangelands may be publicly owned (e.g., national parks, forests, and reserves) or privately owned, with varying management objectives and regulations.

EVALUATION: 1. What is rangeland?

  1. Mention 5 characteristics of rangeland
