SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, learners should be able to:
a. Define tenses and identify their types.
b. Understand and explain the sequence of tenses in sentences.
c. Use correct sequences of tenses in sentences.

SET INDUCTION: The teacher writes two different sentences on the board:

  1. He said he is going to school.
  2. He said he was going to school.
    The teacher asks learners to identify which sentence is correct based on sequence of tenses.

PRESENTATION

INTRODUCTION              

The teacher revises tenses and introduces sequence of tenses. She explains that the tense of the reporting verb determines the tense of the dependent clause.

EXPLICIT INSTRUCTION / TEACHER MODELLING       

The teacher explains the sequence of tenses with examples:   

  • If the reporting verb is in the past tense, the dependent verb will be in the past tense (e.g., He said he was going).
  • If the reporting verb is in the present tense, the dependent verb will stay in the present tense (e.g., She says she is studying).

She provides several examples on the board.

  • Learners observe, take notes, and ask questions for clarification.

 

EVALUATION

The teacher asks learners to identify the correct sequence of tenses in given sentences.

  • Learners identify and explain the sequence of tenses in sample sentences. |

CLASS-WORK

The teacher provides these sentences for practice:

  2. I believe that he __________ (finish) the work soon.
