NOTE

HALOGENS 2

Compounds of Halogens

Uses of Halogens

  1. Chlorine (Cl):

   - Water Treatment: Chlorine is widely used to disinfect water in municipal water treatment plants, killing bacteria and other harmful microorganisms.

   - Bleaching Agent: Used in the production of bleach, which is employed in laundry and cleaning processes.

   - PVC Production: Chlorine is a key component in the production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a versatile plastic.

  1. Bromine (Br):

   - Flame Retardants: Bromine compounds are used as flame retardants in various materials, such as textiles and plastics, to reduce the risk of fire.

   - Pharmaceuticals: Bromine compounds have pharmaceutical applications, including certain medications.

  1. Iodine (I):

   - Disinfectant: Iodine is used as an antiseptic and disinfectant in the form of tinctures and solutions.

   - Nutrition: Iodine is an essential element for the thyroid gland, and iodine compounds are used to fortify salt to prevent iodine deficiency.

   - Starch Test: Iodine solution is employed in the starch test to detect the presence of starch in various substances.

EVALUATION: - Mention two compounds of halogens, given chemical equations respectively.

                          -  Identify the 2 uses of any three halogens.

                          - Discuss briefly, the preparation of chlorine.

CLASSWORK: As in evaluation

CONCLUSION: The teacher commends the students positively.
