INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES:
PERIOD 1:

  1. Review of Argumentative Essay Structure:
    • Recap the key features of an argumentative essay: Introduction, Body, and Conclusion.
  2. Expanding on Arguments:
    • Discuss in-depth techniques for developing a strong argument.
    • Introduce examples of how to use evidence and statistics to support points.

PERIOD 2:

  1. Building a Strong Conclusion:
    • Demonstrate how to write a compelling conclusion that reiterates the main points and final stance.
    • Example: “To conclude, female circumcision is a harmful practice that violates human rights.”
  2. Peer Review:
    • Students exchange essays and provide constructive feedback on each other's arguments.

EXPLICIT INSTRUCTION/TEACHER MODELLING:

  • The teacher models how to expand on an argument and how to provide strong supporting details for claims.
  • Provide a model essay, showing a well-structured introduction, body, and conclusion.

EVALUATION:

  • Learners are asked to submit their essays and explain the arguments they used to support their viewpoints.

CLASS-WORK:

  • Learners are given a new argumentative topic and asked to outline the introduction, main points, and conclusion for their essay.

ASSIGNMENT:
