NOTE
POLLUTION
Pollution refers to the introduction of harmful or poisonous substances into the environment, causing adverse effects on living organisms and their surroundings.
Types of pollution
- Air Pollution: This occurs when harmful or excessive quantities of substances including gases, particulates, and biological molecules are introduced into Earth's atmosphere. Sources include industrial emissions, vehicle exhaust, and burning of fossil fuels. It leads to respiratory problems, smog, and climate change.
- Water Pollution: It happens when pollutants are discharged directly or indirectly into water bodies like rivers, lakes, and oceans, contaminating them. Sources include industrial waste, agricultural runoff, and sewage disposal.
- Land Pollution: This occurs when the land is contaminated by both natural and human activities, such as improper disposal of waste, industrial activities, and excessive use of pesticides and fertilizers.
Effects of Pollution
- Pollution can cause respiratory diseases, such as asthma and bronchitis, due to exposure to air pollutants.
- Pollution harms ecosystems by contaminating air, water, and soil. It disrupts the balance of ecosystems, leading to loss of biodiversity and habitat destruction.
- Greenhouse gas emissions contribute to climate change, leading to global warming.
- Pollution imposes significant economic costs on society through healthcare expenses, loss of productivity due to illness.
Ways to Control Pollution
- Governments can implement and enforce strict regulations and policies to limit pollution.
- Advancements in technology can help mitigate pollution by developing cleaner energy sources, such as solar and wind power.
- Educating the public about the causes and effects of pollution can promote responsible behavior and encourage individuals to adopt eco-friendly practices.
- Supporting sustainable practices and industries can reduce pollution.
EVALUATION: 1. Define pollution
- Identify the 3 types of pollution and describe them.
- Identify 3 effects of pollution
- Mention 4 ways to control pollution
CLASSWORK: As in evaluation
CONCLUSION: The teacher commends the students positively
