b. Identify and apply suffixes to basic root words to form new words.
c. Use words with suffixes in meaningful sentences.

SET INDUCTION: The teacher uses a list of familiar words and shows how they change by adding suffixes.

INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES:
PERIOD 1 AND 2: Suffixes

PRESENTATION

INTRODUCTION          

The teacher introduces suffixes and explains that a suffix is a group of letters added to the end of a root word to change its meaning.

She gives examples: “able” (e.g., comfortable), “age” (e.g., marriage), “ify” (e.g., beautify), “arian” (e.g., humanitarian), “cide” (e.g., pesticide).        

* Learners observe and take notes. They listen to examples and ask questions for clarification.

 

EXPLICIT INSTRUCTION / TEACHER MODELLING    

The teacher explains the meaning and usage of suffixes. She demonstrates the formation of words using these suffixes, e.g.,

healthy → healthyable,

terror → terrorize, and

patriot → patriotism.      

* Learners observe the teacher's explanation and take notes. They participate by asking for examples.

 

PRACTICE                    

The teacher asks learners to list some words with the suffixes “able,” “age,” “ify,” “arian,” and “cide.” She helps learners form new words from root words.      

Learners work in groups, listing words with the given suffixes and creating new words.

 

CLASS-WORK              

The teacher gives learners the following sentences and asks them to underline words with suffixes: "The officer made a decision on the matter." "The manager will reform the system." "She will help you to beautify the room." "The charity works with humanitarian goals."  

* Learners underline the words with suffixes in the sentences.

 

ASSIGNMENT               

  1. Write 5 words using the suffixes –able, –ify, –arian, –cide, and –age.
  2. Create sentences using these words.

* Learners complete the assignment at home.

 

CONCLUSION              

The teacher marks learners' books, corrects mistakes, and commends learners for their effort.      

Learners review corrections and ask questions for clarity.
