NOTE

NATIONALISM

Nationalism may be defined as a strong feeling of love and pride in one’s country.

It has to do with a consciousness of belonging to a nation or country.

Based on the definition of Nationalism given above, the activities embarked upon by some Nigerians in their efforts to secure political independence for the country from the British colonial masters have come to be known as nationalism or Nationalist activities because these activities were motivated by love of the country.

 

Factors responsible for the growth of Nationalism in Nigeria:

  1. The discriminatory attitude of the Europeans to Nigerians in terms of employment leading to limited opportunities for Nigerians in the Civil Service.
  2. The influence of Christianity and establishment of schools.
  3. Formation of political parties such as NYM, NNDP, NCNC, etc were formed and they played leading roles in the growth of Nationalism in Nigeria.
  4. Establishment of Newspapers such as: The West African Pilot, Lagos Daily News, et, played vital roles in the decolonization process.
  5. Political oppression: British Colonial masters were highly dictatorial and high-handed in their administration of Nigeria.

 

Effects of Nationalism in Nigeria

Some of the Consequences of Nationalist Activities in Nigeria are as follows:

  1. Enlightenment: The Nationalists, through their activities, enlightened Nigerians about British Colonial Policies and the need to defend their human rights.
  2. Development of Political Parties:

Nationalism led to the emergence of Political Parties. The first of these parties was the NNDP formed in 1923.

  1. Development of the Press: Nationalism encouraged the emergence of many newspapers principally committed to self-determination for Nigerians.

It promoted contacts among West Africans: Nationalism increased contacts among African colonies.

For example: The emergence of the National Council of British West

Africa (NCBWA-facilitated interactions among Nationalists in Nigeria, Gold Coast (Ghana), Sierra Leone and the Gambia.

  1. Political Independence: Nationalism culminated in the attainment of Political Independence by Nigeria, other colonized countries of Africa and other parts of the world.

Impacts Of The Activities of:

  1. Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe: He contributed greatly to Nationalism by his oratory and the media. He used his chain of newspapers, known as Zik Group of Newspapers to criticize negative colonial policies and mobilize Nigerians for political independence.
  2. Chief Obafemi Awolowo: As a leader of the opposition Action Group, he played prominent role in Nigeria's independence movement. His party, through Chief Anthony Enahoro was the first to move the motion for Nigeria's Independence

In 1949, he founded the Nigerian Tribune, a newspaper that contributed to

nationalist movement by protecting the rights of Nigerians against the injustices of colonialism.

  1. Sir. Abubakar Tafawa Balewa: He was the first Prime Minister of Independent Nigeria (1960-1966). In 1946, He founded the Bauchi Discussion Circle, an organization interested in promoting political reform in colonial Nigeria. Along with Sir Ahmadu Bello, he founded the Northern Peoples' Congress(later renamed Nigeria People’s Congress, NPC), a party that played important role in Nigeria's Independence movement.
  2. Sir Ahmadu Bello: He was one of the founding fathers of the Northern People’s Congress(later renamed Nigerian People’ Congress, NPC) a party that played important role in Nigeria's Independence movement. As premier(1954-1966), he modernized Northern Nigeria and promoted Western Education.
