STEP 1:
The teacher revisits the importance of summarizing text and explains how picking out the topic sentence can help in identifying the main ideas in a passage. The teacher will provide a brief review of how a topic sentence introduces the main idea of the paragraph or passage.

STEP 2:
The teacher reads aloud a short passage. As the teacher reads, they pause to highlight the topic sentence and explain why it is the key idea of the paragraph. Afterward, the teacher rewords the topic sentence in simpler terms to show how it can be summarized.
