NOTE

PREGNANCY AND CHILDBIRTH

Reproduction is a biological phenomenon of the production of offspring/s via different strategies like sexual and asexual reproduction.

REPRODUCTION TERMINOLOGIES

OVULATION

Ovulation is the release of an egg from one of a woman's ovaries. After the egg is released, it travels down the fallopian tube, where fertilization by a sperm cell may occur.

Ovulation typically lasts one day and occurs in the middle of a woman's menstrual cycle, about two weeks before she expects to get her period. But the timing of the process varies for each woman, and it may even vary from month to month.

If a woman is hoping to become pregnant, she will want to keep track of when she may be ovulating. Knowing when a woman is ovulating each month is helpful because she is the most fertile — or able to become pregnant —around the time of ovulation.

MENSTRUAL CYCLE

The menstrual cycle is a natural process. It is a complex cycle controlled by female hormones that cause regular bleeding (periods). The menstrual cycle has four phases: menstruation, the follicular phase, ovulation and the luteal phase

FERTILIZATION

It is the fusion of the male and female gametes in the female reproductive tract to form a zygote.

SIGNS OF PREGNANCY

  1. Missed period. Missing a period is often the first sign of possible pregnancy.
  2. Nausea and vomiting. 'Morning' sickness is a condition that affects more than half of all pregnant women.
  3. Breast changes.
  4. Fatigue.
  5. Frequent urination.
  6. Food cravings.
  7. Backache.
  8. Breathlessness etc

STAGES OF PREGNANCY

Pregnancy is roughly divided into 3 stages known as trimesters of about 3 months each :

  1. first trimester – conception to 12 weeks.
  2. second trimester – 13 to 27 weeks.
  3. third trimester – 28 to 40 weeks.
