NOTE

THE ERA OF IBADAN IMPERIALISM

The era of Ibadan imperialism refers to a period in Yoruba history when the city-state of Ibadan emerged as a dominant political and military force in the region, exerting control over surrounding territories through conquest and expansionist policies. This era is characterized by Ibadan's aggressive territorial expansion, military prowess, and efforts to establish hegemony over neighboring states and city-states in Yorubaland.

Types of Imperialism during the Era of Ibadan Imperialism:

  1. Territorial Imperialism: Ibadan engaged in territorial imperialism by expanding its boundaries through military conquests and annexations.
  2. Political Imperialism: Ibadan imposed its political authority over conquered territories, often installing loyal governors (basorun) and administrators to govern the newly acquired regions.
  3. Economic Imperialism: Ibadan pursued economic imperialism by exploiting the resources and labor of conquered territories for its own benefit.
  4. Cultural Imperialism: Ibadan imposed its cultural and social norms on conquered territories, promoting Ibadan's language, customs, and traditions as dominant within the empire.
  5. Military Imperialism: Ibadan relied on its military superiority to assert dominance and control over neighboring states and city-states. It maintained a formidable army, known for its disciplined infantry and cavalry units, and waged wars of conquest to expand its influence and power.
  6. Strategic Imperialism: Ibadan pursued strategic imperialism by forming alliances with certain states while subjugating others. It engaged in diplomatic maneuvers and political maneuvering to weaken rivals and consolidate its position as the preeminent power in Yorubaland.
