NOTE

AREA OF FARMLAND

  1. Area of farmland

This is the area of shape of the farm.

A = L x B for rectangular

A = ½ bh for triangle.

  1. Number of plant stand /plant population

This is the number of plants in an area of farm land.

Plant population =        Area of spacing of farmland

                                                  spacing

  1. Spacing

This is simply the distance between one crop to the next

NOTE:

1 hectare = 10,000m2

Example 1

If the length and width of a farmland are 80m x 40m respectively, and the spacing of a maize crop plant is 12cm x 12cm, calculate

(a) the area of the farmland;

(b)  the plant population (maize) in the give area;

(c) the total population if there are two plants per stand.

SOLUTION

  1. a)          Area of farmland = Length x Width

= 80m x 40m = 3200m2

(b)          Spacing of crop = 12cm x 12cm or 0.12m x 0.12m

Area of 1 stand of crop=0.12m x 0.12m = 0.0144m2

Plant population              = Area of farmland(m2)

                                                 spacing(m2)

Plant population = 3200m2

                             0.0144m2

The plant population (maize) is estimated at 222,222 stands

(c) since there are two plants per stand the total plant population = 222,222 x 2 = 444,444 maize plants

The total population= 444,444 maize plants

EVALUATION:   1. State the formula for calculating the area of farmland, spacing and plant population

  1. If the length and width of a farmland are 20m x 20m respectively, and the spacing of a maize crop plant is 40cm x 40cm, calculate

                             (a) the area of the farmland;

                             (b)  the plant population (maize) in the give area;

                             (c) the total population if there are two plants per stand.

CLASSWORK: As in evaluation

CONCLUSION: The teacher commends the students positively
