PERIOD 1: Introduction to Features of a Short Story
INTRODUCTION:
Teacher introduces the features of a short story.

  • Discuss the following:
    • Plot: Sequence of events
    • Characters: The people or animals involved in the story
    • Action: What the characters do
    • Style: How the story is told
    • Setting: Time and place of the story
    • Theme: Central idea or message of the story

Teacher Models:

  • Reads a short story and identifies each of the features.

PERIOD 2: Writing a Short Story and Poem
Teacher Models:

  • Demonstrates how to incorporate the features into writing a short story.
  • Learners are asked to write a short story using the features discussed.

Creative Writing Exercise:

  • Learners are asked to write a short story and a poem.
    • Short Story: Must include plot, characters, action, style, setting, and theme.
    • Poem: Must follow the basic elements of a poem such as rhyme, meter, and imagery.

EXPLICIT INSTRUCTION/TEACHER MODELLING:

  • Teacher discusses how to choose a theme for a short story and a poem and how to develop characters and plot.
