NOTE

PATTERN MAKING

Pattern making is the process of creating templates that serve as the blueprint for constructing garments. These templates, or patterns, are used to cut fabric pieces that will be sewn together to form a finished garment. Pattern making is a fundamental skill in fashion design and garment construction, as it translates a designer's vision into a tangible product.

Techniques in pattern making

  1. Taking Measurements: Gathering measurements from a person's body to create a pattern tailored to their size and shape. It's like using a ruler to measure the length of a table.
  2. Drafting: Drawing the basic shapes and lines of a pattern on paper or fabric. It's like sketching the outline of a house before adding details like windows and doors.
  3. Adding Seam Allowance: Extending the edges of the pattern to allow for sewing seams together. It's like leaving extra space around a picture frame to fit the picture inside.
  4. Creating Darts: Marking and shaping fabric to add contour and shape to the garment. It's like folding and pinching paper to make a paper airplane fly better.
  5. Tracing and Cutting: Transferring the drafted pattern onto fabric and cutting out the fabric pieces to assemble the garment. It's like using a stencil to trace shapes onto paper before cutting them out.

Principles of pattern making

  1. Accuracy: Precise measurements and drafting are crucial to ensure that the pattern pieces fit together correctly and that the garment fits well.
  2. Balance and Proportion: Ensuring that the pattern maintains balanced proportions across all pieces to create a harmonious and aesthetically pleasing garment.
  3. Symmetry: Maintaining symmetry in pattern pieces, especially for garments that require mirrored pieces (e.g., left and right sides).
  4. Ease: Including appropriate amounts of ease for comfort and movement, depending on the garment type and fabric used.
  5. Grainline: Aligning pattern pieces with the fabric grainline to ensure proper drape and fit of the finished garment.

 Importance of pattern making

  1. Patterns provide a precise blueprint that guides the cutting and sewing process, ensuring consistency and accuracy.
  2. Allows for the creation of custom-fitted garments tailored to individual measurements, leading to better fit and comfort.
  3. Translates the designer's vision from sketches to actual garments, allowing for creativity and innovation in fashion design.
  4. Speeds up the garment production process by providing a clear and repeatable method for cutting and assembling fabric pieces.
  5. Reduces fabric waste by ensuring that pattern pieces are laid out efficiently on the fabric.

EVALUATION: 1.   Define pattern making

  1. Identify 4 techniques in pattern making
  2. Identify 4  principles of pattern making
