NOTE

ANIMAL NUTRITION AND CLASSES OF ANIMAL FEED

Animal nutrition is the science of understanding the dietary needs and requirements of animals, including livestock, pets, and wildlife. It involves studying the components of animal diets, such as carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water, and how they contribute to the growth, development, reproduction, health, and performance of animals.

Importance of animal nutrition

  1. Proper nutrition ensures that animals receive the necessary nutrients for growth, development, and maintenance of body functions.
  2. Adequate nutrition is essential for reproductive performance, including fertility, gestation, lactation, and offspring health.
  3. Balanced diets help prevent nutrient deficiencies and reduce the risk of diseases and disorders, promoting overall health and longevity.
  4. Good nutrition enhances productivity and performance in various aspects such as milk production, egg laying, weight gain, and work efficiency.
  5. Efficient nutrition management can lead to cost savings by maximizing feed utilization, reducing veterinary expenses, and optimizing production outcomes.

Classification of farm animal feeds

Farm animal feeds can be classified into several categories based on their composition, source, and purpose. Some common classifications include:

  1. Forages: Includes pasture grasses, legumes (such as alfalfa and clover), and browse plants, which are high in fiber and provide the bulk of the diet for many grazing animals.
  2. Concentrates: Energy-rich feeds such as grains (corn, wheat, barley), oilseeds (soybeans, sunflower seeds), and by-products (distillers' grains, soybean meal) that provide concentrated sources of calories and protein.
  3. Roughages: Coarse, fibrous feeds such as hay, straw, and silage, which are important sources of fiber, nutrients, and bulk in the diet.
  4. Supplements: Include mineral supplements, vitamin supplements, and additives such as salt, calcium, phosphorus, and trace minerals, which are added to balance nutrient deficiencies in the diet.
  5. Complete feeds: Pre-formulated mixtures that contain a balanced combination of forages, concentrates, roughages, and supplements to meet the nutritional needs of animals in a convenient form.

EVALUATION: 1. What is animal feeds?

  1. Mention 5 importance of animal feeds.
  2. Identify 5 classes of animal feeds and explain them.

CLASSWORK: As in evaluation

CONCLUSION: The teacher commends the students positively
