SYSTEMS OF THE BODY: CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
The circulatory system, also known as the cardiovascular system, is a network of organs and vessels responsible for transporting blood, oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste products throughout the body. It consists of the heart, blood vessels (arteries, veins, and capillaries), and blood.
The heart acts as the pump that drives blood circulation, pumping oxygen-rich blood to the body's tissues via arteries and receiving oxygen-depleted blood back from the tissues via veins. Arteries carry oxygenated blood away from the heart to the body, while veins return deoxygenated blood back to the heart. Capillaries, the smallest blood vessels, facilitate the exchange of oxygen, nutrients, and waste products between the blood and tissues.
