NOTE

THE SECOND PHASE OF BRITISH CONQUEST 1900-1914

The second phase of British conquest in Nigeria, spanning from 1900 to 1914, marked a period of intensified colonial consolidation and expansion as the British sought to assert greater control over the territory and its diverse peoples. This phase was characterized by the formal establishment of British colonial rule, the imposition of administrative structures, and the extension of British authority into previously autonomous regions.

Military Campaigns and Pacification (1900-1903)

The period from 1900 to 1903 saw a series of military campaigns and pacification efforts by the British colonial administration aimed at subduing resistant indigenous states and consolidating control over the territory. British forces, equipped with superior weapons and technology, faced resistance from various ethnic groups and traditional rulers who opposed colonial rule.

Establishment of Colonial Administration (1900-1914)

The second phase of British conquest in Nigeria witnessed the formal establishment of British colonial administration and governance structures. In 1900, the British government merged the separate colonial territories of Lagos and the Niger Coast Protectorate to form the Colony and Protectorate of Southern Nigeria, with its capital in Lagos.

British officials, known as Resident Commissioners and District Officers, were appointed to oversee the administration of the colony and protectorates, implementing colonial policies, collecting taxes, and maintaining law and order.

Extension of Infrastructure and Development Projects

The second phase of British conquest also witnessed the extension of infrastructure projects, including the construction of roads, railways, telegraph lines, and other public works. These projects were aimed at facilitating trade and communication, promoting economic development, and consolidating British control over the territory.

The construction of the Lagos-Kano Railway, completed in 1912, was a significant infrastructure project that linked the northern and southern regions of Nigeria, further integrating the colony and facilitating the movement of goods and people.

Impact and Legacy

The second phase of British conquest in Nigeria had profound and lasting consequences for the region. The imposition of colonial rule resulted in the erosion of indigenous political authority and the displacement of traditional rulers and institutions. The extension of British control over the territory facilitated the exploitation of Nigeria's natural resources, including palm oil, cocoa, and rubber, for the benefit of the British Empire.
