NOTE

PUBLIC ENTERPRISES
Public enterprises are business organizations established, managed and controlled by the government. They are also called Public corporations. Some popular examples are NPA, NAA, PHCN etc

 

HOW PUBLIC ENTERPRISES ARE FORMED

There are two ways public enterprises can be formed

  1. created by legislative act or decree
  2. Nationalization of private industries- this is when local/private industries are brought under the management of government

 

FORMS OF PUBLIC ENTERPRISES

  1. PUBLIC UTILITIES: These are government parastatals that provide essential services to the citizens at subsidized cost. This will ensure balance between social and economic objectives e.g. Water Corporation.
  2. POLITICAL BOARD: These are autonomous establishments which execute the policies of the government within a specific sector of the economy. An example is the Schools Management Board.
  3. COMMERCIAL ENTERPRISES: These are government owned bodies set up to create competitive environment and make profit from their operation. They are autonomous in structure and operation e.g. PHCN.
