NOTE

ESSENTIALS OF GARMENT CONSTRUCTION

Garment construction involves creating clothing through a systematic process of designing, cutting, and sewing fabric. This process relies on three main principles: functional, structural, and decorative design.

Principles of garment construction

Each principle plays a crucial role in the overall design and utility of the garment.

1.) Functional Design

Functional design refers to the practical aspects of a garment. This principle ensures that the clothing serves its intended purpose effectively. Elements include:

I.) Comfort: Ensuring that the garment is comfortable to wear, with appropriate fit and ease of movement.

II.) Utility: Incorporating features like pockets, zippers, and buttons that enhance the garment's usability.

III.) Durability: Choosing materials and construction methods that ensure the garment withstands wear and tear.

IV.) Climate Appropriateness: Selecting fabrics and designs that are suitable for the intended weather or climate conditions.

2.) Structural Design

Structural design focuses on the framework and construction techniques that give a garment its shape and form. This involves:

I.) Pattern Making: Creating templates for each part of the garment, which are then used to cut the fabric.

II.) Seam Construction: Using different types of seams (e.g., flat-felled, French seams) to assemble the pieces, ensuring strength and stability.

III.) Darts and Pleats: Adding darts, pleats, and other shaping techniques to fit the garment to the body's contours.

3.) Decorative Design

Decorative design pertains to the aesthetic elements that enhance the garment's visual appeal. This includes:

I.) Embroidery and Appliqué: Adding decorative stitching or fabric pieces to embellish the garment.

II.) Trims and Notions: Using ribbons, lace, buttons, and other trims to add interest and detail.

III.) Color and Pattern: Selecting fabric colors and patterns that create the desired visual effect and style.

IV.) Surface Treatments: Applying techniques like dyeing, printing, or fabric manipulation (e.g., smocking, beading) to enhance the garment’s appearance.
