NOTE

WHEELS AND TYRES

A wheel

A wheel is a circular component that rotates around an axle and is typically used in vehicles, machinery, or other equipment to facilitate movement.

Functions of a wheel includes:

1.The primary function of a wheel is to support the weight of a vehicle or object and enable it to move smoothly over a surface.

  1. Wheels reduce friction between the vehicle and the ground, allowing for efficient movement with minimal resistance.
  2. Wheels, especially when paired with steering mechanisms, allow for precise control over the direction of movement.
  3. In some cases, wheels can absorb shocks and vibrations from uneven terrain, providing a smoother ride for passengers or ensuring stability for equipment.
  4. In vehicles, wheels are often connected to an engine or motor through a drivetrain, allowing for the transmission of power from the engine to the wheels, propelling the vehicle forward or backward.

A Tyre

A tyre is a rubber covering that fits around a wheel's rim to provide traction, cushioning, and protection from damage caused by friction with the road surface.

Functions of a tyre include:

  1. Traction: The tread pattern on the tyre's surface grips the road, providing traction to prevent slipping and sliding, especially in wet or slippery conditions.
  2. Support: tyres support the weight of the vehicle and its occupants, distributing the load evenly across the tyre's surface.
  3. Cushioning: tyres absorb shocks and vibrations from the road, providing a smoother and more comfortable ride for passengers and minimizing wear and tear on the vehicle.
  4. Steering Response: tyres play a crucial role in the vehicle's handling and responsiveness, transmitting steering input from the driver to the road.
  5. Braking: tyres contribute to the vehicle's braking performance by providing grip and traction to slow down or stop the vehicle effectively.
  6. Heat Dissipation: tyres dissipate heat generated during driving, helping to prevent overheating and maintaining optimal performance.
  7. Protection: tyres shield the wheel's rim from damage and provide a barrier against punctures, cuts, and abrasions from debris on the road.

EVALUATION: 1. Define a wheel

  1. Identify 4 functions of the wheels
  2. Mention 4 functions of the tyre

CLASSWORK: As in evaluation

CONCLUSION: The teacher commends the students positively
