MAINTENANCE AND CARE OF THE HOME

Cleaning agents are chemicals that aid the washing and cleaning of kitchen equipment and utensils. The commonly cleaning agent used in the kitchen is soap. Soap is classified into local and commercial cleaning agent.

        Homemade or locally made cleaning agents are the ones made by using local materials within our environment, they are cheap and effective. Examples include grinded egg shell, pawpaw leaf, wood ash, local sandpaper leaf, coconut husk, fine sand, soap etc.

        Commercial cleaning agents are produced industrially after undergoing some certain processes. They are always expensive and come in form of solid bar, paste, liquid, powder etc. examples are detergent, bar soap, morning fresh, windows lane, and silvo.

        Abrasives are substances used for grinding or polishing surfaces in the kitchen; they are used for scurrying or rubbing off dirt or stains on equipment. It can be classified into local and commercial.

 

PREPARATION OF SIMPLE CLEANING AGENTS

Home-made Furniture Polish

Materials Needed for Making Home-made Furniture Polish

(i) 28gm candle wax

(ii) 8gm bar soap

(iii) 7ml boiling water

(iv) 7ml turpentine or kerosene

Procedure for Making Home-made Furniture Polish

  1. Grate the wax and soap.
  2. Place the grated mixture in an earthen ware pot or enamel pot.
  3. Pour the boiling ware over the mixture
  4. Stand the pot in boiling water and allow the content to melt.
  5. Beat the melted mixture thoroughly into cream using a wooding spoon.
  6. Add turpentine gradually and keep beating until the polish is perfectly blended.
  7. Store in a good container and cover well.

 

Home-made Scouring Powder (Local abrasive)

Materials Needed for Making Home-made Scouring Powder

(i) Egg shells

(ii) Broken chin ware (if available)

(iii) Detergent powder

Procedure for Making Home-made Scouring Powder

  1. Grind the egg shells and pieces of china wares into very fine powder
  2. Sift the mixture to ensure a smooth powder.
  3. Mix the powder thoroughly with the detergent powder
  4. Store in a dry contain and cover with a tight fitting lid.

 

Uses of Home-made Cleaning Agents

Different materials can be obtained or produced in the home and used as cleaning agents. These include:

  1. Fine sand: This can be obtained from;
  2. Sifted sand with the use of sieve, mixed with powdered detergent.
  3. Sand sucked from rugs, carpet or foot mat with the use of vacuum cleaner. vacuum cleaner.
  4. “Edo” powder: This is a yellow substance that is common in Nigerian markets. It has a fine smooth texture. It can be used for cleaning ornaments such as copper, gold and brass.
  5. Finely ground charcoal: This can be used for cleaning clean metal surfaces.
  6. Pawpaw leaves: Fresh paw-paw leaves can be used for cleaning dirty galvanised pails and blackened aluminium pans and pots.
  7. Local sand paper leaves (Asisa leaves): These leaves have rough sandy surfaces. They can be used as abrasives for cleaning plain wood surface, blackened pots, etc.
  8. Home-made “Vim” scouring powder (Abrasives): These can be made from;
  9. dried ground egg shell
  10. wood or charcoal ash mixed with detergent
  11. Broken china ware or tiles mixed with powdered detergent

 

KITCHEN LINEN AND THEIR USES

Kitchen linen are the different types of linen used for cleaning and maintaining proper hygiene and safety in the kitchen. They include;

  1. Tea towel: for wiping cutleries, cook grease, glass ware and also to dry vegetables when necessary.
  2. Dish cloth: to wipe kitchen equipment, table and work areas and sink, they can also be used to wipe off split liquids.
  3. Oven gloves/ cloth: for removing hot pot and dishes from the oven and top ranges.
  4. Hand towel: for drying hands.
  5. String mop: for mopping any split liquid or for drying the floor after mopping.
  6. Napkin: for drying hands.
  7. Muslin: for covering food and straining

 

CLEANING EQUIPMENT

We have brooms, brushes, dusters, mops and dust pans as cleaning equipment others include buckets, carpets, sweeper and vacuum cleaner.

GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR CARE OF CLEANING EQUIPMENT

  1. Handle them carefully
  2. Use them correctly
  3. After each use clean the equipment
  4. Give each equipment more thorough cleaning once a week
  5. Store each equipment properly after use once a week
  6. Avoid damaging equipment
  7. Repair a damaged equipment as soon as possible.
