NOTE

LAND TRANSPORTAION

This is the mode of transport that involves moving goods from one place to other on the land

 

FORMS OF LAND TRANSPORTATION

They include

  1. road transport
  2. rail transport

 

  1. ROAD TRANSPORT

This is the movement of goods from one place to the other on the road. Vehicles such as cars, buses, trailers etc are used

 

MERITS OF ROAD TRANSPORTATION

  1. it is not capital intensive
  2. it allows for door-to-door delivery
  3. Goods can be readily available in rural areas
  4. Routes and timing are flexible and adjustable
  5. It is very suitable for short distances
  6. It is easy to save some more especially from the packaging cost
  7. it delivers goods to the end users rapidly
  8. There is lesser risk of the damage of goods in transit

 

DEMERITS OF ROAD TRANSPORTATION

  1. It is most unsuitable especially during rainy seasons especially if the roads are in bad conditions
  2. there are higher chances of road accidents and vehicle breakdowns for road transportation
  3. It is unsuitable for bulky goods and long distances
  4. there is no structure as prices could fluctuate due to a number of factors

 

  1. RAIL TRANSPORTATION

This is a means of transferring goods along railway tracks via wheeled vehicles running on rails

MERITS OF RAIL TRANSPORTATION

  1. It is dependable as it is the least affected by weather conditions
  2. It is very organized as it has fixed routes and schedules.
  3. its speed over long distances is relatively high compared to other means of transportation except for air transportations
  4. It is the safest from of transportation
  5. it is relatively cheap compared to other forms of transportation
  6. its ability to carry bulky goods is large compared to most forms of transportation

 

DEMERITS OF RAIL TRANSPORTATION

  1. it is unsafe for fragile items
  2. it is not suitable for emergency or express deliveries as it has fixed bookings and schedules
  3. it is unsuitable for short distances
  4. it is unsuitable for rural areas
