HOUSEHOLD LAUNDRY
Finishing on garments
After washing, garments may undergo various types of finishing processes to achieve desired characteristics. Some common types of finishing given to garments include:
- Pressing: Using a press or iron to flatten and smooth out wrinkles and creases in the fabric.
- Steam Pressing: Applying steam to garments while pressing to help relax fibers and remove stubborn wrinkles.
- Tumbling: Placing garments in a tumble dryer to remove excess moisture and fluff fibers.
- Crease Setting: Creating and setting creases in trousers and sleeves for a crisp appearance.
- Starching: Applying starch to garments to add stiffness and body, particularly to collars, cuffs, and pleats.
- Softening: Using fabric softeners or conditioners to make garments feel softer and more comfortable against the skin.
- Resin Finishing: Applying resin-based chemicals to garments to enhance properties such as wrinkle resistance, shrinkage control, and color fastness.
- Garment Dyeing: Dyeing garments after washing to achieve desired colors or effects.
Guidelines for Ironing
General rules to observe while ironing include:
- Check Fabric Care Labels: Always follow the manufacturer's instructions on the fabric care label to determine the appropriate ironing temperature and settings for the garment.
- Sort Garments: Sort garments based on fabric type and recommended ironing temperatures to prevent damage.
- Use a Clean Iron: Ensure the iron plate is clean and free of any residue or buildup that could transfer onto garments.
- Adjust Temperature: Adjust the iron temperature according to the fabric type (e.g., low for delicate fabrics, medium for synthetics, high for cotton and linen).
- Use Steam Appropriately: Use steam to help remove wrinkles, but avoid over-wetting fabrics, especially delicate ones.
- Iron Inside Out: Iron garments inside out to prevent shine and protect delicate fabrics from direct heat.
- Start with Low Heat: When in doubt, start with a lower heat setting and gradually increase if needed to avoid scorching or melting fabrics.
- Hang or Fold Immediately: Hang or fold garments immediately after ironing to prevent wrinkles from forming again.
EVALUATION: 1. Identify the finishing on garments
- Discuss the guidelines for Ironing
