BALL GAMES: HOCKEY

Hockey is a popular team sport that involves players using sticks to hit a small, hard ball or puck into their opponent's goal. There are several types of hockey, including ice hockey, field hockey, roller hockey, and street hockey.  The primary goal of hockey is to score more goals than the opposing team by getting the ball or puck into the opponent's goal.

Components Of Hockey

1 Players: A typical hockey team consists of 11 players on the field or ice, including a goalkeeper. Substitute players can be used throughout the game.

  1. Playing surface: Ice hockey is played on an ice rink, which is a rectangular surface with rounded corners and enclosed by a barrier or boards.

 - Field hockey is played on grass or artificial turf.

 - Roller hockey can be played on both indoor and outdoor surfaces.

- Street hockey is played on asphalt or concrete.

  1. Equipment:

  - Ice hockey: Players wear ice skates, protective gear, and use a long stick with a curved end called a blade to hit a rubber puck.

  - Field hockey: Players wear cleats or turf shoes, shin guards, and use a curved stick to hit a hard, plastic ball.

  - Roller hockey: Players wear rollerblades or inline skates, protective gear, and use a stick similar to ice hockey to hit a puck or ball.

   - Street hockey: Players wear appropriate footwear and use a hockey stick to hit a ball or puck.

  1. Gameplay: Games typically consist of three periods, with breaks in between. The duration of each period varies depending on the level of play and the type of hockey.

Rules of the game

  1. The game starts with a face-off, where one player from each team attempts to gain control of the puck or ball.
  2. Players must use their sticks to move the puck or ball around the playing area, with the ultimate goal of getting it past the opposing team's goalkeeper and into the goal.
  3. Players can pass the puck or ball to their teammates or dribble it forward themselves. They must not use their hands or any other body part to move or control the puck or ball.
  4. The goalkeeper is responsible for protecting their team's goal and preventing the opposing team from scoring. They are allowed to use their hands and other body parts to block and save shots on goal.

Fouls and Penalties

Various actions can result in penalties, such as tripping, hooking, or slashing an opponent, or playing the puck or ball with a high stick. Penalties can result in a player being removed from the game for a set amount of time or a power play, where one team has more players on the field or ice than the opposing team.
