NOTE

EXTENSIVE  MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

An extensive management system, also known as extensive farming or extensive agriculture, involves minimal human intervention and relies heavily on natural processes and resources. In this system, animals are typically allowed to roam freely over large areas of land, grazing on natural vegetation and foraging for food.

Advantages of Extensive Management

  1. Extensive management requires minimal infrastructure, inputs, and labor compared to intensive systems, resulting in lower operational costs for farmers.
  2. Extensive systems make efficient use of natural resources such as pasturelands and natural vegetation, reducing the need for artificial inputs like feed and fertilizers.
  3. Extensive management can promote biodiversity by maintaining natural habitats and ecosystems, providing habitats for various wildlife species alongside livestock.
  4. Extensive farming generally has a lower environmental footprint compared to intensive systems, with less pollution, soil degradation, and habitat destruction.

Disadvantages of Extensive Management

  1. Extensive systems typically yield lower productivity per unit of land or animal compared to intensive systems, limiting potential output and profitability for farmers.
  2. Animals in extensive systems are more exposed to weather fluctuations, natural disasters, and predation, leading to higher risks of losses and reduced resilience.
  3. Extensive farming requires large tracts of land to support grazing and foraging activities, making it less feasible in areas with limited available land or high population density.
  4. With minimal human intervention, extensive systems offer limited control over factors such as animal health, nutrition, and breeding, potentially leading to lower overall animal welfare and health outcomes.
