NOTE
PROBLEMS OF FARM MECHANIZATION.
- Land tenure system: The types of land ownership in Nigeria do not allow the use of farm machines.
- Poverty of farmers: Some farmers are poor and cannot afford to own farm machines.
- Inadequate machines and facilities: Are not enough where they are available.
- Bad nature of land (Topography): The topography of west African lands are rough and too bad for mechanization.
- Soil types: The soil type in West Africa does not suit mechanization and suitable machines have not been produced.
- Inadequate spare parts: Most of the machines spare parts are imported and not easily found to repair damaged parts.
- Inadequate operators: Train people to handle and repair these machines are scarcely found.
- Scattered farm land/fragmentation: scattered farm lands or fragmented are not conducive for mechanization.
LIMITATION OF FARM MECHANIZATION.
- Economic factors: Farm machines are not readily available in the country.
- Poverty: Most of the farmers are poor and cannot afford to buy or own farm machines.
- Land tenure system: Land fragmentation and system of ownership like communal do not allow the use of farm machines.
- Lack of spare parts: Lack of spare parts also hinders the use of farm machines.
- Seasonality of operation: The seasonal nature of Agriculture in West African can render the machines idle for mouths and this can result to depreciation of the machines.
- Ignorance: Many farmers are still ignorant of the use of farm machines and some are still reluctant to use them.
- Lack of extension agents: People to train and educate illiterate farmers are not enough to carry out their job.
- Illiteracy of farmers: Most farmers are illiterate and cannot operate or use these machines.
- Maintenance cost of the farm machine is high and cost of hiring the machines are also high.
- Most of the machines are not adapted to our local soil type.
- Lack of experts to handle the machine.
- Peasant farmers have small fragment of farm land.
EVALUATION: 1. Discuss the problems of agricultural mechanizations
- Discuss the limitations of agricultural mechanization
CLASSWORK: As in evaluation
CONCLUSION: The teacher commends the students positively
