NOTE

SEMI-INTENSIVE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

A semi-intensive management system is a farming method that lies between extensive (free-range or pasture-based) and intensive (confinement or factory farming) systems. In semi-intensive systems, animals have access to outdoor areas but are also provided with some level of shelter, feeding, and care by humans.

Advantages of Semi-intensive Management System

  1. Semi-intensive management allows for better control over environmental factors such as feeding, housing, and disease prevention, leading to improved productivity compared to extensive systems.
  2. While not as intensive as full confinement systems, semi-intensive management still provides better waste management and environmental stewardship compared to extensive systems, reducing pollution and resource depletion.
  3. Semi-intensive systems often provide better living conditions for animals compared to extensive systems, allowing for more space and freedom of movement while still offering some level of human care and supervision.
  4. Semi-intensive management strikes a balance between extensive and intensive systems, offering a compromise between productivity and cost, making it economically viable for many farmers.

Disadvantages of Semi-intensive Management System

  1. Compared to extensive systems, semi-intensive management typically requires more labor inputs for tasks such as feeding, monitoring animal health, and maintaining facilities, increasing operational costs.
  2. While less intensive than full confinement systems, semi-intensive management still generates environmental impacts such as waste production and potential pollution, albeit to a lesser extent.
  3. Semi-intensive systems may face increased risks of disease spread compared to extensive systems due to higher animal densities and closer proximity to humans, necessitating stricter biosecurity measures.
  4. Semi-intensive management may not be as scalable or efficient as intensive confinement systems, limiting the potential for expansion or maximizing production within a given space.

EVALUATION: 1. What is semi intensive management system?
