NOTE

LOSS ADJUSTERS AND LOSS ASSESSORS

Loss adjuster is a person who is employed by an insurance company to

evaluate an insurance claim and decide how much money should be paid

to a person making a claim. The insurer will send an insurance loss

adjuster to assess the damage to your vehicle, after which the insurer will

authorize repairs.

Features of loss adjusters 

  1. Loss adjusters are claims specialists.
  2. They are required to have specific qualifications in relation to their field of

expertise.

  1. He is professional intermediary whose principal function is to investigate

insurance claims.

  1. He is paid by an insurance company to investigate a complex or

contentious claim on their behalf.

Loss assessor 

Loss assessors are appointed by policyholders to manage a claim on their

behalf. Loss assessors can also be appointed by a group making a claim·

They can be called on to help with all manner of loss-related insurance

claims. 

Features of Loss assessor

  1. They do meet with insurance company representatives or their appointed

loss adjusters, in order to negotiate the best possible claim settlement for

the insured. 

  1. The person making the claim will pay their fees and employ them to deal

with substantial claims.

Duties of loss adjusters 

  1. The role of a loss adjuster is to provide support and guidance in the

event of an insurance claim.

  1. To do this there is a need for expert knowledge and skills, along with a

full understanding of the insurance cover and the circumstances of the

claim. 

  1. Loss adjusters treat and evaluate insurance claims by investigating the

cases and determining liability and damage, in accordance with the policies

of the insurance company. 

  1. They interview the claimant and witnesses and write reports for the

insurer where appropriate recommendations for the settlement are made.

  1. They carry out pre-loss/post-loss survey, and make recommendations

for risk improvement/prevention. 

  1. They also determine whether the loss reported is covered under the

terms and conditions of the policy, and whether there is breach of warranty

which is fundamental to the loss. 

  1. They also give advice on measures/features that can minimize loss in

the future.
