NOTE

STRONG INSTITUTIONS IN NIGERIA

  1. ARMED FORCES
    These are constitutionally empowered bodies for the protection and defence of the territorial integrity of a democratic state against external aggression and internal insurrection.

ROLES OF THE ARNED FORCES
a. To provide internal security and stability

  1. to maintain law and order
  2. to provide humanitarian support and aid in the times of violence and crisis
  3. to perform search and rescue missions especially for citizens
  4. they provide security for borders especially against external attacks or infiltrations
  5. They defend the country

 

  1. TRADE UNIONS

They are a registered body whose membership consists of workers united to protect their common interest

ROLES OF TRADE UNIONS

  1. they negotiate the pay and working conditions of workers
  2. they take collective action to enforce the terms of the group’s bargaining
  3. they raise new demands on behalf of their members
  4. they negotiate relationship between workers and their employers

 

  1. CIVIL SOCIETIES
    These are organizations that enhance the general welfare and development of a democratic state

ROLES OF CIVIL SOCIETIES

  1. They serve as watchdogs for political office holders especially in the

misuse of their office

  1. they hold political office holders accountable
  2. they sponsor bills in the legislative house
  3. They inform and enlighten people on national issues
  4. They work to eradicate poverty and illiteracy in rural communities
  5. They render professional medical, legal and financial assistance to fight

oppression and tyranny

  1. They stage protest against unpopular government policies, programmes

and actions which may threaten the survival of the polity

  1. They defend the fundamental human right of the citizens

 

  1. ECONOMIC AND FINANCIAL CRIMES COMMISSION(EFCC)

They are the body responsible for investigating and prosecuting economic

and financially related crimes such as money laundering, advance fee

fraud (419), etc.

ROLES OF THE EFCC

  1. investigates economic and financial crimes
  2. prosecutes financial and economic crimes offenders
  3. provides financial security in Nigeria

 

  1. Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS)

They are the body responsible for approving the right to visit or stay in the

Country via legal means, not causing any form of insecurity or danger

ROLES OF NIS

  1. Controls entry into the country and exits out of the country
  2. issues travel documents e.g Nigerian passport
  3. secures borders and controls activities therein
  4. issues resident permits to foreigners
  5. enforces laws and regulations bordering around immigration

 

  1. STATE SECURITY SERVICE(SSS)

They are the primary intelligence gathering agency of Nigeria

 

ROLES OF SSS

  1. protest and defend the country against internal/domestic threats
  2. Uphold and enforce the criminal laws of Nigeria
  3. maintain peaceful co-existence in Nigeria
  4. They protect key political office holders such as the President, Vice

president, Senate President etc
