FIRST AID TREATMENT II
First aid treatment for common injuries includes basic steps to manage minor injuries and stabilize more serious ones until professional medical help is available. The following is simple guide for handling some common injuries:
Cuts and Scrapes
- Rinse under running water to remove dirt and debris.
- Apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth or bandage.
- Use an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment.
- Use a sterile bandage or dressing.
- Look for signs such as redness, swelling, or pus.
Burns
- Hold the burn under cool (not cold) running water for 10-20 minutes.
- Cover with a sterile, non-stick bandage or cloth.
- Do not apply ice directly to the burn as it can cause further damage.
- If blisters form, do not pop them.
- Use over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
Sprains and Strains
- Avoid using the injured limb.
- Apply an ice pack wrapped in a cloth for 15-20 minutes every 1-2 hours.
- Use an elastic bandage to compress the area, but not too tightly.
- Elevate the injured limb above heart level to reduce swelling.
- Over-the-counter pain medication can help.
Bruises
- Apply an ice pack to the area for 15 minutes every hour for the first day.
- Avoid activities that might aggravate the bruise.
- Elevate the bruised area if possible.
- Use a compression bandage to reduce swelling.
Nosebleeds
- Sit upright and lean slightly forward.
- Pinch the nostrils together just below the bridge of the nose.
- Continue to pinch for at least 10 minutes without releasing.
- Do not tilt the head back or lie down.
Fractures
- Keep the injured area as still as possible.
- If trained, apply a splint to immobilize the fracture.
- Apply a cold pack to reduce swelling.
- Get professional medical assistance immediately.
Insect Stings
- Scrape off the stinger with a blunt object like a credit card.
- Clean with soap and water.
- Reduce swelling with an ice pack.
- Use antihistamines for itching and swelling, and pain relievers if needed.
- Seek emergency help if there are signs of anaphylaxis, such as difficulty breathing or swelling of the face and throat.
