WHOLESALE TRADE

Wholesales is the process by which goods are bought in bulk from the

producers and sold in bits to retailers

 

A wholesaler is a person who buys in bulk from the producers and sells in

bits to the retailers

 

FUNCTIONS OF THE WHOLESALERS TO THE PRODUCER

  1. buys in bulk
  2. advertises the product
  3. performs the function of warehousing in some cases

 

FUNCTIONS OF THE WHOLESALERS TO THE RETAILERS

  1. Transportation and delivery services
  2. sponsors the distribution of the products
  3. provides a wide variety of goods to them

 

CLASSIFICATION OF WHOLESALE TRADE

  1. Merchant Wholesalers: Merchant wholesalers include two broad types:
  2. Full-service wholesalers provide a full set of services
  3. limited-service wholesalers offer fewer services to their suppliers and

customers. The several different types of limited-service wholesalers

perform varied specialized functions in the distribution channel.

 

  1. Brokers and agents: They differ from merchant wholesalers in two ways:

They do not take title to goods, and they perform only a few functions. Like

merchant wholesalers, they generally specialize by product line or

customer type.

A broker brings buyers or sellers on a more permanent basis.

Manufacturers’ agents (also called manufacturers’ representatives) are the

most common type of agent wholesaler.

carries out the sales of goods by themselves rather than through

independent wholesalers.
