NOTE

NUPE

The Nupe (traditionally called the Nupawa by the Hausas and Tapa by the neighbouring Yoruba) are an ethnic group native to North Central Nigeria. The emergence of the Nupe State can be traced back to the migration of various groups to the confluence of the Niger and Kaduna rivers in present-day Nigeria. Over time, these groups coalesced into the Nupe people, forming a centralized state with its capital at Bida.

Economic activities of Nupe people.

The main economic activities of the Nupe people included agriculture, fishing, trade, and craftsmanship. Agriculture was primarily focused on the cultivation of crops such as millet, yams, and sorghum, while fishing played a significant role due to the proximity of the Niger and Benue rivers. Trade was facilitated by the strategic location of the Nupe State at the confluence of these rivers, allowing for access to both inland and trans-Saharan trade routes. Craftsmanship was also prominent, with skilled artisans producing items such as pottery, textiles, and metalwork.

Role of rivers Niger and Benue on Nupe history.

The rivers Niger and Benue played a crucial role in Nupe history. They served as important transportation routes, facilitating trade and communication with neighboring regions and beyond. Additionally, these rivers provided a source of water for agriculture and fishing, contributing to the economic prosperity of the Nupe State. Moreover, the strategic location of the confluence of these rivers offered natural defenses against external threats, enabling the Nupe people to establish a stable and influential state in the region.
