INSTITUTIONAL SPORTS-NUGA

Institutional sports refer to organized sports activities that take place within or between educational institutions, such as schools, colleges, and universities, or other types of institutions like clubs and organizations. These sports programs are typically managed by the institution's athletic department or a dedicated sports authority.

The Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA)

The Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) is an organization that plays a crucial role in promoting university-level sports events in Nigeria. Founded in 1966 at the University of Ibadan, NUGA was established shortly after the first West African University Games, which took place in 1965. The association has since grown to include 36 member universities across Nigeria.

The first NUGA games were held in 1966 at the University of Ibadan, with the participation of the five universities that existed in Nigeria at the time: the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), Ile-Ife, University of Ibadan, University of Lagos, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

NUGA approves fifteen different sporting events at the University Games, encompassing a wide range of disciplines:

  2. The games serve as a platform for identifying and nurturing athletic talent among university students, potentially guiding them towards national and international sports careers.
  3. By promoting regular participation in sports and physical activities, NUGA games contribute to the physical and mental well-being of the student population.
  4. NUGA aims to strike a balance between academics and athletics, emphasizing the importance of excelling in both fields and demonstrating that sports can complement academic pursuits.
