NOTE

GARMENT CONSTRUCTION: FREE HAND CUTTING

The freehand method of cutting, also known as freehand cutting, is a technique used in pattern making and garment construction where the fabric is cut without the use of a pre-existing pattern or template. Instead, the cutter relies on their skill and experience to cut the fabric directly based on measurements, markings, or visual estimation.

Methods of Freehand Cutting:

  1. Visual Estimation: The cutter visually estimates the shape and dimensions of the garment pieces and cuts the fabric accordingly, based on their experience and expertise.
  2. Measurements and Markings: Measurements are taken directly from the wearer or a dress form, and markings are made directly onto the fabric before cutting. The cutter then follows these markings to cut the fabric freehand.

Techniques Involved in Freehand Cutting

  1. Drapping: The fabric is draped directly onto a dress form or the wearer's body, and the cutter shapes and pins the fabric to create the desired silhouette before cutting.
  2. Scissor Work: Skilled manipulation of the scissors to make precise and smooth cuts along the fabric, following the intended shape and contours of the garment pieces.

Merits of Freehand Cutting

  1. Allows for greater flexibility and creativity in garment design, as there are no constraints imposed by pre-existing patterns.
  2. Well-suited for one-of-a-kind or custom garments, as the cutter can tailor the cutting process to the specific measurements and preferences of the wearer.
  3. Can be faster than traditional pattern cutting methods, particularly for experienced cutters who are skilled at visual estimation and cutting techniques.

Demerits of Freehand Cutting

  1. Requires a high level of skill, experience, and confidence to accurately cut fabric freehand, which may be challenging for novice or less experienced cutters.
  2. May result in less precise and consistent garment pieces compared to cutting with a pattern, leading to variations in fit and construction.
  3. Can potentially lead to more fabric waste if mistakes are made during cutting, as there are no pattern pieces to optimize fabric usage.

EVALUATION: 1.  What is freehand cutting?

  2. Mention 2 merits and 2 demerits of freehand cutting
