NOTE

CARE OF THE YOUNG ANIMAL IMMEDIATELY AFTER BIRTH

The following are the ways to care for young animals immediately after birth

Foetus expulsion/cleaning up

  1. Immediately after birth, it's crucial to ensure the newborn animal is breathing properly and free from any obstructions.
  2. If the mother doesn't remove the fetal membranes herself, gently remove them to prevent suffocation.
  3. Additionally, wiping the newborn with clean, dry towels helps stimulate circulation and removes excess fluids, promoting warmth and comfort.

Umbilical cord cutting

  1. After the foetus is expelled, promptly clamp and cut the umbilical cord using sterile equipment to prevent infections.
  2. Leave a sufficient length of cord attached to the newborn to minimize bleeding.
  3. Properly disinfecting the umbilical stump with iodine or other antiseptic solutions reduces the risk of umbilical infections.

Access to colostrum

  1. Colostrum, the first milk produced by the mother, is crucial for the newborn's immunity and overall health.
  2. Ensure the young animal receives colostrum within the first few hours of birth, as it contains antibodies that provide passive immunity against diseases.
  3. If the mother is unable to nurse, provide colostrum from a different source, such as a colostrum replacer or donor animal.

Lactation

  1. Encourage early nursing to establish the bond between the mother and offspring and stimulate milk production.
  2. Monitor the newborn's suckling reflex and ensure proper latch-on to the teat.
  3. Adequate nutrition and hydration for the mother are essential to support lactation and ensure the quality and quantity of milk production.
  4. Regularly observe the newborn for signs of adequate milk intake, such as a rounded belly and contentment after nursing, and intervene if necessary to address any nursing difficulties or health issues.

EVALUATION: 1. Briefly describe the care to be giving a young animal during lactation.

  1. Describe how to clean up a young animal that has just been born.
