  • Write a summary of a passage in 3-4 sentences.

INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES:

  • Discussion, guided practice, group work

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS:

  • Sample passages, chalkboard, flashcards

INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES:
STEP 1:
The teacher introduces the topic of summary writing by defining a summary. A summary is a concise restatement of the main ideas or points in a passage. The teacher revisits the characteristics of a summary:

  • It should be brief and to the point.
  • It excludes unnecessary details.
  • It should cover only the key ideas.
  • It must be written in the learner's own words.

STEP 2:
The teacher shares a sample passage on the board. The passage will include a variety of sentences, some of which are key points that should be included in a summary. The teacher explains how to identify the key sentences that convey the main ideas of the passage.

Sample Passage:
"The sun rises early in the morning and gradually illuminates the landscape. It signals the start of a new day. People wake up to begin their daily activities, such as going to work, attending school, and running errands. The sun's warmth and light are crucial for sustaining life on Earth, as they support plant growth, provide energy, and maintain the climate."

STEP 3:
The teacher models how to summarize the passage. A possible summary could be:
"The sun rises each morning, bringing light and warmth that support life on Earth. It signals the beginning of daily activities, such as work and school."

STEP 4:
The teacher encourages students to practice writing their own summaries of similar passages, helping them identify key sentences. Students will write a 3-sentence summary of the passage on their own.

STEP 5:
The teacher circulates, providing support as students write their summaries.

EVALUATION:

  • Define summary writing in your own words.
  • Identify the key points in the sample passage.
  • Write a 3-sentence summary of the passage.

CLASS-WORK:

  • Write a summary of the following passage in 3 sentences:
"Every morning, the birds chirp loudly outside my window. They fly from tree to tree, looking for food. Some birds fly long distances to find food and shelter, while others stay in one place and build nests. Birds are an essential part of nature, helping to pollinate plants and control insect populations."

ASSIGNMENT:

  • Write a summary of the following article in 4 sentences:
"The internet has revolutionized the way we communicate, learn, and share information. It has provided new opportunities for education, business, and entertainment. However, it also comes with challenges, such as cyberbullying and misinformation. To make the most of the internet, individuals must use it responsibly."

CONCLUSION:
The teacher reviews the students' summaries and provides feedback. The teacher emphasizes the importance of summarizing main points and excluding irrelevant details.
