NOTE

SEWING TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

Sewing tools and equipment are essential for various tasks in sewing, from cutting fabric to stitching garments and finishing projects.

Basic Sewing Tools

  1. Needles: Needles are slender, pointed tools made of metal used for sewing. They have a hole (eye) at one end for threading and a sharp point at the other to pierce fabric. Hand sewing needles come in various sizes and types for different fabrics and purposes, such as embroidery, quilting, or general sewing.
  2. Threads: Threads are long, thin strands of fiber used for sewing fabrics together. They come in various materials (such as cotton, polyester, silk, and nylon) and thicknesses, and can be matched to fabric colors for nearly invisible seams or chosen for contrast in decorative stitching.
  3. Scissors: Scissors are cutting tools with two sharp blades that pivot on a fulcrum to cut fabric, threads, and other materials. Tailor's scissors or shears are specifically designed for cutting fabric with precision, while small, sharp scissors are used for snipping threads and trimming small details.
  4. Cutting Tools: In addition to scissors, other cutting tools include rotary cutters, which have a circular blade for cutting fabric layers smoothly and accurately, and fabric cutting mats, which protect surfaces and help achieve straight cuts.
  5. Pin and Pin Cushion: Pins are thin, sharp pieces of metal with a head at one end, used to temporarily hold pieces of fabric together before sewing. A pin cushion is a small cushion designed to safely store pins and keep them easily accessible.
  6. Measuring Tools: These include measuring tapes (flexible tapes marked with units of measurement for taking body measurements and measuring fabric), rulers, and seam gauges (small tools with a sliding marker for measuring and marking small distances accurately).
  7. Marking Tools: Marking tools are used to transfer patterns, mark sewing lines, or indicate points on fabric. They include tailor’s chalk, fabric markers, water-soluble pens, and tracing wheels with carbon paper.
  8. Iron and Ironing Board: An iron is an appliance that uses heat to press and smooth fabric, setting seams and removing wrinkles. An ironing board is a flat, padded surface on which fabric is laid for ironing.

EVALUATION: 1.  Define sewing tools.

  1. Mention 5 sewing tools and equipment you know
